TED REYNOLDS - CEYLON 1960-69
In 1960 I sailed on the Wilhelm Ruis (Dutch line) to Ceylon, via the Suez canal and returned to UK in 1969 after Mrs Bandaranaike became Prime Minister. Under pressure from the Buddhist monks, who were instrumental in her regaining power after her husband’s assassination, she imposed many changes both in Parliament and the country, which now had to be called Sri Lanka and the official language became Sinhalese. I married Roshan Pestonjee whom I had met in 1959 in London. She was a Parsee but had been born in Colombo. The Parsees settled in Bombay after expulsion from Persia and their skills in commerce and administration proved very valuable to the British during their 250 year occupation of India. Her grandfather had settled there in the 1890’s and eventually owned the sole coaling and victualling rights to Colombo harbour. After our marriage we spent nearly 12 months in the Maldive Islands, where Roshan tried to establish the first Montessori school but ran into so many problems that we had to return to Colombo. I worked as a freelance for both Grant Advertising and J.Walter Thompson and then joined the largest Publishing and Printing firm, M.D. Gunasena & Co., as Art Director. By 1969 we had 3 children, Jan Avril, Michael and Dio. But their future and mine was now in jeopardy following further Government restrictions and we returned to London.
